CLUB HISTORY

THIS IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF WOMBOURN CTC.

A cycling club was founded in Wombourn in the late 1950's by Mr. Fred Gascoigne and other keen cyclists. In the early 1960's Mr. Gascoigne convinced the committee of the South staffs D.A. of the C.T.C. that a separate section based in Wombourn was viable-although for a time it was classed as a 'sub section' of the much larger Wolverhampton Section.
Fred was the inspiration and impetus behind the section until his early death in August 1978. If it wasn't for Fred, we would not have had a cycle club in Wombourn.
We owe him a great debt of gratitude. Cycling to Fred--'was Wombourn' and Wombourn to cyclists-- 'was Fred'
With the closure of the Wolverhampton Section, Wombourn Section stood alone on the Western fringes of the South Staffordshire Towns in providing cyclists with a local cycle touring club. (Dudley, Lichfield and Walsall Sections cover the rest of the old Southern Staffordshire County area).
